Handmade ‘Wind in the Willows’ Pop-Up Carousel Book

Kenneth Grahame wrote ‘The Wind in the Willows’ in 1908; at a time when Arcadia and Classical Studies were deeply embedded in British Society. These things influenced garden design, architecture, and even home interiors. It seemed that, despite the growing Industrialisation of Britain, people were craving an escapist connection to Nature and Fantasy. The Book was part of a wider project where I involved the community in sharing their memories of The Wind in the Willows as letters, inspired by Kenneth Grahame’s original way of telling the story. You can contribute to this project here.

My goal with this project was to reconnect a modern audience to Nature, using the historical influences in order to pay homage to such a well-loved Classic.

I applied the Fibonacci Sequence to the text, then included it on Pop-Up spirals throughout the spreads, and designed Lift-the-flap Postage Stamps to include more text.

The whole book has six spreads that open up and join in the round to form the carousel.
